History of Male :
The entire island group is referred to as the Maldives. The term “Maldives” is related to The islands of Malé maldives. The first people to settle in the Maldivian islands were Dravidians who migrated from the neighboring shores of the modern Indian Subcontinent and coastal Ceylon.
Dravidian influence on Maldivian culture:
Through comparative studies of Maldivian language, oral traditions, cultural practices, and folklore, it is evident that there was a significant Dravidian influence on Maldivian culture, particularly on the king’s island.
Garland Islands or Chain Islands :
The Giraavaru people of Giraavaru claim to be the descendants of the first Tamil settlers in the Maldives. These early Tamil settlers named the islands Malaitivu, which means “Garland Islands” or “Chain Islands”. According to legend, Giraavaru fishermen used to regularly visit a large sandbank at the southern end of their atoll to clean tuna fish after a successful catch.
Ibn Battuta opinion about maldives :
When Ibn Battuta traveled to Malé Maldives in 1343, he penned a thorough description of the city and the Maldives Islands as a whole. He noted that the Queen, Rehendhi Khadeeja, had a residence on Malé island, which, judging by his account, could have been the same palace utilized by later sultan rulers at the island’s core. The palace grounds housed numerous pits filled with cowrie shells earmarked for commerce. Furthermore, Ibn Battuta recorded the existence of several wooden mosques in the vicinity.
The need for new housing :
Capital Malé island had a population of 2,148 residents in 1888, however, due to rapid population growth, the need for new housing spaces arose. During Muhammad Shamsuddeen III’s reign, the old forts and crumbling walls were torn down and rebuilt on a smaller scale between 1925 and 1927. Roads were also expanded and straightened.
remodeling of the city :
Former large cemeteries were removed to make room for additional houses. Following the abolition of the monarchy in 1968, President Ibrahim Nasir oversaw the remodeling of the city, resulting in the demolition of the Royal Palace, forts, and bastions. The National Museum, Malé Friday Mosque, and the last sultan’s residence are the only remaining structures. The population of Malé increased to 11,453 in 1967 and 29,522 in 1977. By 1986, the shallow lagoon surrounding Malé was reclaimed to accommodate the growing population.
